About
Machida Shuzoten is a sake brewery located in Shimoshinden (下新田), Tamamura Town, Sawa District, Gunma Prefecture. It is said to have operated as a sake brewer during the Edo period in what is now Minamitama (南玉) in Tamamura Town, and in 1877 (Meiji 10) it moved to its present location in Shimoshinden. Its shop name (yago) is "Sakaeya," and its flagship brand is Taiheijin. The brewery also produces Sakaeya Shiroemon (栄屋四郎衛門) and Kagayaki no Itteki (輝きの一滴). It focuses on yamahai brewing (a traditional yeast-starter method) and aims to revive an "all-Tamamura sake" made with local rice and water. According to the Gunma Prefecture brewery introduction (as of 2021, Reiwa 3), the brewery is currently brewing jointly with other breweries in the prefecture while preparing for its revival under its fifth-generation owner.
