Kikuzake (chrysanthemum sake)
菊酒きくざけKikuzake is a special sake traditionally drunk mainly on September 9, the Chrysanthemum Festival (Choyo), and refers to sake with chrysanthemum petals floating in it. It has long been enjoyed as a ritual to ward off evil spirits and to pray for longevity. The chrysanthemum is regarded as a symbol of eternal youth and long life, and its beautiful appearance and fragrance are also said to bring joy to those who drink it. Kikuzake is more than a simple drink: it is part of a traditional culture imbued with the meaning of praying for health and happiness.
