About

Shimonoseki is famous for tiger pufferfish (torafugu). Locally, pufferfish is called "fuku" rather than "fugu," because the sound of "fugu" is associated with adversity (fugu), while "fuku" borrows the auspicious meaning of happiness and good fortune (fuku). For this reason, Shimonoseki is also described as a city where fuku brings fortune. In 1888 (Meiji 21), Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister, who was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture and had deep ties to Shimonoseki, declared that there was no poison in Shimonoseki's fugu. As a result, fugu consumption was legalized here ahead of the rest of the country. Since then, Shimonoseki has spread its reputation nationwide as the home of fugu. The city handles more fugu than anywhere else in Japan, and many fugu restaurants (fugu ryotei) can be found locally. Fugu hire-zake, sake warmed with grilled fins of pufferfish, is an essential accompaniment to fugu cuisine. The Fukunohirezake from Shimonoseki Shuzo is made with a commitment to authenticity and contains grilled fins of tiger pufferfish. For this reason, it is available only in a One Cup format, similar to the containers served at ryotei restaurants. Enjoy the authentic flavor, which is unforgettable once tasted, in the comfort of your own home.
