Labeling Standards for Sake Manufacturing Methods and Quality (Seishu no Seiho Hinshitsu Hyoji Kijun)
清酒の製法品質表示基準せいしゅのせいほうひんしつひょうじきじゅんThe Labeling Standards for Sake Manufacturing Methods and Quality (清酒の製法品質表示基準, Seishu no Seiho Hinshitsu Hyoji Kijun) are guidelines that set out important rules on the production process and quality of sake. The standards are based on the Liquor Business Association Act (酒類業組合法) and have been in effect since April 1, 1990 (Heisei 2). They consist of four items: (1) labeling of sake with specific designations, (2) required labeling items, (3) optional labeling items, and (4) prohibited labeling items. Under the labeling of specific designations, categories such as Junmai and Daiginjo are stated explicitly, which makes it easier for consumers to choose. The required items include the production method, ingredients, and alcohol content, which help consumers understand the product. Optional items, on the other hand, may be written freely by the producer and can include, for example, regional characteristics or hints about flavor. Prohibited items are information that could mislead consumers, and accurate, reliable labeling is required. The purpose of these standards is to ensure the quality of sake and to strengthen consumer trust.
