Kikichokku (sake tasting cup)

利猪口ききちょこ
The kikichokku (利猪口, also read richoku) is a special vessel used for tasting sake (kikizake). It is generally made of white porcelain, with an indigo-blue janome (snake's-eye) ring pattern on the bottom. This pattern serves not only as a visual accent but also helps in appreciating the aroma and color of the sake. The capacity is usually around 200 ml, and during tastings the sake is poured to about 80 percent of the cup's capacity. The kikichokku is an important tool for tasting sake well, and an ideal vessel for bringing out its flavor and character.
