Suspended solids (SS)
浮遊物質量ふゆうぶしつりょうSuspended solids (SS) refers to the amount of solid matter floating in water, and is one of the indicators used to show how clean or polluted the water is. Together with BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and COD (chemical oxygen demand), it is used to evaluate the quality of drinking water and wastewater. In sake brewing, the rice-washing wastewater discharged when washing sake rice can have particularly high SS values, which indicates that it contains many impurities. Measuring SS makes it possible to understand the quality of the sake and how water is managed in the production process.
