SS (Suspended Solids)

SSえすえす
SS is an abbreviation for Suspended Solids, and refers to the amount of solid matter floating or suspended in water. This indicator shows the presence of fine solid particles in water or other liquids, and is used together with BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and COD (chemical oxygen demand) to evaluate the degree of water pollution. In the sake-making process, SS values are generally high in the wastewater from washing sake rice. This is because impurities and debris adhering to the surface of the rice are washed off, and the residue remains suspended in the water. Managing SS is one of the important factors in brewing clear sake.
