Thousand-grain weight (senryuju)
千粒重せんりゅうじゅうThousand-grain weight (senryuju, 千粒重) is the weight of 1,000 well-formed brown rice grains. This measure is used to evaluate the size and quality of rice grains. In general, large, well-filled grains give a higher thousand-grain weight, which helps in checking the quality of the rice and its suitability for polishing (rice polishing ratio). Measuring thousand-grain weight is also important in sake brewing, because it serves as an indicator when selecting good sake rice, making it a key factor at harvest time and when preparing the brew.
