About
Before the war, Kame no O was grown as a table rice across a wide area from Hokuriku to Tohoku. After the war, however, it fell out of use because it was not suited to modern farming methods that rely on chemical fertilizers introduced from the United States. It returned to the spotlight through the series Natsuko no Sake (those who watched it when it first aired are likely in their 40s or older). Because Kame no O is not a sake rice, it requires great care in brewing. At 150 cm, its plants are the tallest in Japan, which makes cultivating it the most difficult in the country.
